The aim is to improve the appearance of the skin – for example, by reducing age spots and evening out skin tone.
WHO CAN GET CHEMICAL PEEL?
Most anyone can have some type of chemical peel, but people with fair skin are usually the best candidates. If you have darker skin, you may get good results, but you may also have a higher risk of uneven skin tones after the treatment.
Issues that usually don’t respond well to chemical peels include rosacea, severe wrinkles, skin bulges, and sagging skin. For those concerned, you might fare better with a laser treatment.
We might advise against a chemical peel if you’ve taken certain oral acne medications in the past six months, have a personal or family history of keloids, are pregnant, or frequently experience cold sore outbreaks.
Before having a chemical peel, tell us about any history of cold sores, as well as any facial X-rays, or scarring you’ve had.
WHY DO A CHEMICAL PEEL?
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure. Depending on the issues you’re addressing with the procedure, you’ll choose a chemical peel in one of three depths:
Light chemical peel. A light (superficial) chemical peel removes the outer layer of skin (epidermis). It’s used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone and dryness. You might have a light peel every two to five weeks.
Medium chemical peel. A medium chemical peel removes skin cells from the epidermis and from portions of the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). It’s used to treat wrinkles, acne scars and uneven skin tone. You might need to repeat the procedure to achieve or maintain the desired result.
Deep chemical peel. A deep chemical peel removes skin cells even deeper. Your doctor might recommend one for deeper wrinkles, scars or precancerous growths. You won’t need repeat procedures to get the full effect.
Chemical peels can’t remove deep scars or wrinkles or tighten sagging skin.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET A CHEMICAL PEEL?
Since every person is different, the ideal schedule for this treatment will vary drastically depending on what sort of peel you’d like to get, the existing damage that you have on your skin, and your age.
CAN CHEMICAL PEEL REMOVE ACNE SCARS?
Chemical peels improve the appearance of acne scars by using a chemical solution to remove the outer layer of old skin. The new skin that replaces it is usually smoother and less scarred in appearance.
